John R. Russell, MD
John R. Russell, MD, co-founder of the Indianapolis Neurosurgical Group, died on February 14, 2004. He was a leader in Neurosurgery - both nationally and in Indiana.

Dr. Russell was born in Bloomington, IN, on March 17, 1922. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Chicago. He trained in Neurosurgery at the University of Chicago and the University of Tennessee (Memphis). When he completed his Neurosurgical training at age 26, he was one of the youngest neurosurgeons ever to begin practice. He started his career in Indianapolis as a professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He then practiced Neurosurgery at Methodist and St. Vincent Hospitals for over thirty years prior to his retirement.

Although Dr. Russell was extremely busy in his private practice, he also served the Indianapolis community and the specialty of Neurosurgery exceptionally well. For many years he volunteered his time to run the Neurosurgical service at Marion County General Hospital (now Wishard Memorial Hospital) - before that hospital was operated by Indiana University (starting in 1966). He provided emergency room coverage; and he ran clinics and performed surgery for indigent patients. He also served as president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons from 1966 to 1967. The Congress is one of the two major Neurosurgical organizations in the United States. Its primary mission is to promote Neurosurgical education.

Dr. Russell was very devoted to every aspect of Neurosurgery: he had kindness and compassion for patients and their families; he possessed tireless energy to respond to anyone who might need his services - day or night; and his technical skills, clinical judgment, honesty, sincerity and professionalism set an excellent example for the group he help found.
